Greyson's Choice was created to raise awareness about the risk of family domestic violence in all of its forms. It is a 501 (c)(3), and our mission is to develop programs, education, and training for all parties involved in family court. Our goal is to seek the protection of children innocently involved in domestic custody challenges. We aim to change how domestic violence and abuse issues are addressed in family courts and help pass new laws that always put child safety first. Greyson's Law was introduced to do such that. If Greyson had a choice, he would have chosen to live a full, long, happy life. He would have chosen safety. He would be alive.
Greyson's Choice was founded by his mother, Ali Kessler, in memory of her sweet, vibrant, and fearless 4.5-year-old son Greyson "Gigs," who was murdered by his biological father in a murder-suicide during an unsupervised, court-approved visit. Greyson's death was 100% preventable, but judges denied injunctions and restraining orders, citing insufficient evidence. But there was. They just chose to ignore it, giving power to parents' rights first, not children's safety.
Tragically, Greyson's story is not unique. Each year, 58,000 children are court-ordered into the custody of a dangerous parent. More than half a million children are ordered to be with a parent who emotionally, physically, or sexually abuses them by family courts. These abusers also use various tactics to hurt the other parent, including coercive control, gaslighting, and verbal abuse to make them out to be the victim.
We honor Greyson's memory by working to ensure no other child should have the same fate as Gigs and no other family should be impacted by a similar tragedy.
Gigs swinging life away
We hope to provide education, and training for all those involved in custody evaluation and children's safety. This includes lawyers, judges, GALS, mediators, and anyone else involved. The goal of continued education is for these individuals to learn more about domestic violence in all of its forms, not just physical, recognizing red flags can help save children's lives.
We are working with local state senators and house representatives in order to help pass reform in the archaic family court system. Our first goal is to get Greyson's Law passed in Florida. We aim to change the way domestic violence and abuse issues are addressed in family courts and help pass new laws that always put child safety first. Greyson's Law 2.0 was re-filed again for 2023 by Senator Lori Berman (D-Boca Raton) and Representative Hillary Cassel (D-Dania Beach) as SB 130/HB 97.
We have a village of people who want to come together to help others. Our goal is to provide events, conferences, workshops, and fundraisers to raise money for domestic violence and law reform. From protective parent groups, to learning about coercive control red flags, Greyson's Choice is all about helping each other and protecting each other.
